Italian Ciabatta Bread

This easy Italian Ciabatta bread recipe for bread machines produces a nice white loaf with a slightly crunchy crust and golden appearance. Perfect with pasta dishes. The literal translation of the word ‘ciabatta’ is slipper due to the elongated, flat shape of the loaf when traditionally made by hand.

Prep Time: 5 mins
Ready In: 4 hours 30 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 tsp Dried Yeast (for bread machines)
  • 500g (1lb 2oz) Strong White Flour
  • 1 tsp Sugar
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 3 tbsp Virgin Olive Oil
  • 350 ml Water

Method

Measure out your ingredients and simply follow your Bread Machine instructions to create your own ciabatta bread! For the Panasonic bread machine, we add the ingredients to the pan and select the Italian BAKE program of 4 hours 30 minutes.

Hints & Tips

Choosing a bread machine can be difficult but we highly recommend the Panasonic SD-255 Automatic Breadmaker (now replaced by the Panasonic SD-2501 WXC Automatic Breadmaker which is the newer model – see below). Although more expensive than some models, the Panasonic machines produce great results and we have had ours for some years now.

Our favourite choice of white flour for this recipe is Waitrose Canadian Strong White Flour which produces good results and flavours every time. Traditionally milled, it is sold by Waitrose in 1.5 kg bags.
